Energy saving ideas for work

Heating 

  • If you’re too hot, use heating controls to turn down your radiator before opening a window
  • Find your heating sweet spot and leave it there
  • Thermostatic radiator valves left on suitable setting – spot the dot
  • Windows and doors closed if the heating is on
  • Set room thermostats no higher than 20oC
  • Make sure radiators are not blocked with furniture etc.
  • Keep halls and corridors cooler by setting thermostatic radiator valves to 2
  • Keep an extra layer handy for cooler days
  • Pull the blinds and curtains at dusk to keep the heat in

Lights

  • Switch off lights when leaving and area / room
  • Switch off lights at the end of the day
  • Switch off lights if it is bright enough
  • Use task lighting when you only need one light
  • Label banks of light switches so you know which one to turn off
  • Open the blinds for more daylight

IT

  • Shut down PCs at the end of the day
  • Switch off PC monitor at the end of the day
  • Switch off PC monitor at lunchtime and meetings
  • Set up power saving options on your PC
  • Dim your screen
  • Turn of PC peripheral after use
  • Unplug chargers after use
  • Switch off equipment after use
  • Use power strips and remote control sockets to make it easer to switch off
  • Select the most energy efficient model when purchasing new equipment

Printers

  • Set up a default to print both sides
  • Switch off central printers at the end of the day
  • Only turn on personal printers where you need to print
  • Use narrow margins on documents to print fewer pages
  • Print in black and white if you don’t need colour

Cooling

  • Windows and doors closed if the cooling is on
  • Set thermostats in cooling mode no lower than 24oC

Water

  • Report dripping taps
  • Turn taps off fully
  • Only run the water tap for as long as is needed
  • Use hot water dispensers rather than kettles
  • Only fill the kettle with the water needed
  • Wash dishes in a plugged sink or bowl
  • Turn on the dishwater when it is full
  • Take the 5 minute shower challenge
